Champions crowned at FWSSR ProRodeo Tournament

by Susan Kanode

FORT WORTH, Texas, (Feb. 8, 2025) --- The 2025 edition of the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo’s $1.5 million FWSSR ProRodeo Tournament came to a close in Dickies Arena on Saturday night.

The big money winner was bull rider Maverick Potter from Waxahachie, Texas, and his win could be a game changer for his season. He qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) in 2022 and finished the season in 12th place. The next two years were filled with struggles. Potter finished 45th in 2023, and last year was 24th. While it didn’t put him among the top 15 that qualify to compete for world titles, that finish was good enough to get him a spot here.

Potter competed in Bracket 1 of the tournament and was the only bull rider who was successful in both rounds. He earned $7,000 in those rounds, came back to the Semi-Finals and was successful again. In fact, Potter was the only man to ride all four of the bulls that he climbed on. In the Championship Finals, he notched the high score at 89.5 points on Sutton Rodeo’s Mr. Demon to win $20,000. When all his winnings were added together, he was the biggest money earner at this year’s rodeo with $30,333. That money will put him well on the way to qualifying for this year’s NFR in Las Vegas next December. He was unranked in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings prior to this rodeo and is likely to move all the way to the top.

Shad Mayfield’s winning ways continued as he earned his second consecutive Fort Worth tie-down roping championship. Mayfield grew up in Clovis, New Mexico, but lives in nearby in Lipan, Texas, now. He stopped the clock in 7.6 seconds for the title. After winning this rodeo last year, he qualified for his sixth NFR and went on to win his first gold buckle as the All-Around World Champion. Shad was the 2020 world champion tie-down roper and has been working hard to win that championship again. The win here will help him to make the trip to Las Vegas again next December for rodeo’s championships.

Another local competitor that took home a title was barrel racer Andrea Busby from Brock. She was riding her great mare, Born on Derby Day, that she calls Derby. They had the fastest run on Saturday night at 16.16 seconds and earned $27,700. It was a big win for Busby who qualified for her first NFR last December and is hoping to be back there next December.

Jesse Brown from Baker City, Oregon, earned $25,818 in the steer wrestling. He won his first title in Dickies Arena when he stopped the clock in 3.6 seconds. In the fastest event at the rodeo, breakaway roping Josie Conner, from Iowa, Louisiana, got the win with a 1.8 second run. She added $28,017 to her season earnings.

Team roper Tanner Tomlinson who lives at Mineral Wells, Texas, did the heading for Jay, Oklahoma’s Travis Graves. They are a new team for 2025, and the partnership worked well enough at the ProRodeo Tournament for them to get the win. They stopped the clock in 4.9 seconds in the finals for the title and earned a total of $25,350.

Nick Pelke of Mondovi, Wisconsin, made an outstanding 91.5-point ride on J Bar J Rodeo’s horse named Straight Stick to win the bareback riding. Pelke earned $26,136 total and, if his success continues, he will be traveling to Las Vegas to compete at his first NFR.

In the saddle bronc riding it was Idaho’s Kade Bruno who got the win. Bruno rode another horse from J Bar J Rodeo named Straight Moonshine for 92 points. He earned $27,636 and if his success continues through the rest of the year, he will be competing at his fourth NFR. He was leading the world standings before Fort Worth’s rodeo and extended his lead significantly.
Total payoff at this year’s rodeo was over $1.5 million. Plans are underway for the 2026 edition of the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, scheduled for January 16 – February 7.

Brackets conclude at Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo

by Susan Kanode

FORT WORTH, Texas, (Feb. 4, 2025) --- The final bracket of the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo (FWSSR) ProRodeo Tournament ended in Dickies Arena on Tuesday night.

And Bracket 7 offered contestants the final opportunity to advance and have an opportunity to win a championship at the legendary rodeo. Bull rider Tristan Mize from Bryan, Texas is one of those.

Mize tied for the win in round one of Bracket 7 on Monday. He came back on Tuesday night and again tied for the top spot, this time with an 88-point ride. That came aboard Rafter G Rodeo’s Sea of Sorrow.

He started riding bulls in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association in 2016. The next year, he finished 17th just narrowly missing a qualification for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR). Then he took a break from competing. He came back last year and finished 38th, giving him qualifications for the major rodeos including the one in Fort Worth. He is currently 13th in the world standings and stands to improve that significantly. Mize is headed to Fort Worth’s Semi-Finals.

Also scoring 88 in Tuesday night’s bull riding was Caldwell, Idaho’s Brady Portenier. He rode a bull from New Jersey’s Cowtown Rodeo named Big Twist. Portenier earned the tournament championship the first year the rodeo was in Dickies Arena and that win propelled him to his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. His ride on Tuesday gives him a chance at the Wildcard on Wednesday where he will need to be among the top 2 bull riders to advance to the Semi-Finals.

World champion barrel racer Kassie Mowry has had some success here the past two years, but the Fort Worth championship has evaded her. Tuesday, she stopped the clock in 16.13 seconds, the second fastest run of the entire rodeo. Riding her great gelding Force The Goodbye that is known as Jarvis, Mowry is advancing to the Semi-Finals here along with Brock, Texas, resident Andrea Busby, who qualified for her first NFR last year and won the second-most prestigious title in rodeo, the NFR championship for having the fastest total time on ten rounds.

Dylan Hancock from San Angelo also made his first appearance at rodeo’s championships in the tie-down roping. Hancock stopped the clock in 7.4 seconds on Tuesday. Combined with a third-place finish in round one, he is now Semi-Finals bound.

Wednesday’s Wild Card round will feature eight competitors in each event. It is the last opportunity to advance to the Semi-Finals and only two of the eight will advance. The action, which is part of Cook Children’s Day at the FWSSR, gets underway at 7:30 p.m.

Four-legged athlete takes center stage at Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo

by Susan Kanode

FORT WORTH, Texas, (Feb. 2, 2025) --- No one has been more successful at this year’s Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo ProRodeo Tournament than a Canadian athlete that has four legs.

Logan Bird, from Nanton, Alberta, is the proud owner of one of the most famed and beloved tie-down roping horses going down the road today. And while Bird has been riding Daddys Shiner Cat commonly known as “Peso,” that’s not all that has made the 14-year-old buckskin horse famous.

The quick-footed athlete has been the chosen mount for a lot of competitors at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) for several years. In fact, he has been in Las Vegas for rodeo’s championships four times and had five different riders. None of them were Bird.

However, Bird had enough success in 2024 to qualify for the rodeo in Dickies Arena. He and fellow Albertan Kyle Lucas both rode Peso in Bracket 5 and are advancing to the Semi-Finals.

Bracket 6 started Saturday night and was completed Sunday afternoon. The buckskin gelding was in familiar territory with San Angelo, Texas, roper Ty Harris on his back. During last year’s NFR, Harris rode Peso for nine of the 10 rounds in Las Vegas.

Harris placed third on Saturday, then came back on Sunday, and stopped the clock in 8.7 seconds for first place. Because of his success in Bracket 6, he is now the third man to advance to the Semi-Finals riding the talented “Peso.”

Halyn Lide made her first appearance at the NFR in December and is using that momentum to start her 2025 season. Riding her great horse Jettin Ta Heaven that she calls “Keeper,” she tied for first in the first round of Bracket 6 then won round two outright.

A year ago, Lide, from China Spring, Texas, was competing here for the first time. This year, she is at the top of the bracket and returning to compete in the Semi-Finals.

Monday night’s rodeo will be round one of Bracket 7. Action starts at 7:30 p.m. and fans will see the final group of 2025 tournament contestants. Tuesday night’s competition in Dickies Arena will determine the final contestants to advance to the Wild Card and Semi-Finals rounds where they will have a spot in the Championship Finals on Saturday, February 8, in their sights.

Friday filled with excitement at Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo

by Susan Kanode

FORT WORTH, Texas, (Jan. 31, 2025) --- With two performances at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo (FWSSR) ProRodeo Tournament on Friday, rodeo contestants were going for broke in every event.

Bracket 4 was completed during the matinee performance where the 2019 world champion tie-down roper, Haven Meged, from Miles City, Montana made it known that he wants to win a title here.

Meged stopped the clock in 8.8 seconds Thursday, then came back and was even faster Friday afternoon at 8.5. He has won a total of $4,410 here so far and is now hoping to add to that during the Semi-Finals.

Meged will be one of eight competitors in Semi-Finals 1 or 2. He will need to be among the four fastest contestants to advance to the Championship Finals on Saturday, February 8, to have an opportunity to win his first title here.

Also moving on after tying for the arena record on Thursday are team ropers Dustin Egusquiza and Levi Lord. Egusquiza is originally from Florida, but lives near Mineral Wells, Texas now. Lord is his neighbor, but still calls Sturgis, South Dakota, home. They backed up their 3.6-second run from Thursday with a 4.0 for another round win on Friday. They have each earned $4,750 here and could win more in the Semi-Finals.

Friday night’s action was highlighted by bareback rider Tilden Hooper’s 90-point effort on Smith Pro Rodeo’s horse named Risky Business. Hooper won this rodeo in 2020, and a lot has changed in his life in the past five years. His family has grown and he and his wife, Melissa are the proud parents of three toddlers.
“This is the greatest job I never knew I would have,” Hooper said. “Nothing compares with being a husband and a father. It puts rodeo into perspective.”

Jordon Briggs had the fastest time in the barrel racing on Friday night at 16.30 seconds. The 2021 world champion won the title here in 2009 as Jordon Peterson aboard Frenchman’s Jester when the rodeo was held in Will Rogers Coliseum. This year her success is on Famous Lil Jet known in the rodeo world as Rollo. She finished just outside the top 15 that qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in 2024 and wants to be on the inside looking out this year. A win here would certainly help her accomplish that goal.

Hooper, Briggs, and all the other Bracket 5 competitors will ride again on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. Then Saturday night at 7:30, a new group of contestants will start Bracket 6 of seven.

Otero family shines at FWSSR ProRodeo Tournament Wednesday

by Susan Kanode

FORT WORTH, Texas, (Jan. 29, 2025) --- Wednesday night at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo (FWSSR) ProRodeo Tournament belonged to the Otero family.

Tie-down roper Michael Otero, his barrel racing wife Carlee and their two sons, Hudson and Houston, make their home about an hour from Dickies Arena, home of the legendary Fort Worth rodeo. The trip home had to be a happy one as both competitors were successful here.

Michael Otero competed first and tied for the top spot in round two of Bracket 3 with Quade Hiatt from Canyon, Texas. They each had a time of 8.7 to win $2,092. Otero also won money on Tuesday night and advances to the Semi-Finals with the highest total earnings of $3,933.

After he roped, he became the support system for his wife. Carlee Otero was the final barrel racer to compete and had the fastest time of the rodeo here so far at 16.19 seconds. She was riding her horse Blingolena that she rode at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in December. She also won last night and is the high-money earner out of bracket 3 in her event at over $4,600.

Now both Oteros are bound for the Semi-Finals next week and hope to have enough success to advance to the championship finals. They each could win a coveted FWSSR championship.
Wednesday night’s team roping was emotional for all of the competitors. Texan Peyton Walters from Justin won the team roping at the Gladewater (Texas) Round-Up Rodeo last June with Brandon Gonzales from Lipan. That earned them a coveted spot in the tournament.

Just days before the rodeo here started, Gonzales lost his battle with cancer. That not only left Walters without a friend; it left him without his roping partner. When he backed into the heading box here, Jake Edwards from Fort Ann, New York was doing the heeling. They stopped the clock in 4.6 seconds for the win. Their $2,375 won’t be enough to advance to the Semi-Finals but honoring his friend while roping here was the biggest accomplishment for Walters.

Wyoming’s Brody Cress swept the saddle bronc riding. After winning round one with a 90.5-point ride, he came back Wednesday night and was 89.5 on United Pro Rodeo’s Awesome Sauce to win again. He is now making plans for the Semi-Finals and hoping to win his first FWSSR championship.

A new set of contestants will be at Dickies Arena for Bracket 4 of the FWSSR ProRodeo Tournament Thursday, January 30 for rodeo action beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Oftedahl leads Bracket 2 Winners at Fort Worth’s ProRodeo Tournament

by Johna Cravens

FORT WORTH, Texas (Jan. 27, 2025)

Chance Oftedahl of Pemberton, Minnesota, was the only contestant in Bracket 2 of the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo’s (FWSSR) $1.5 million ProRodeo Tournament to win both quarterfinals rounds in his event.

The tie-down roper turned in a time of 8.1 seconds to win round two of his bracket Monday night in Dickies Arena. The former Odessa College rodeo team member who spends his non-rodeo time training horses also won the first round on Sunday.

He will advance to the semi-finals scheduled for February 6 and 7 along with former world champion Shane Hanchey of Sulphur, Louisiana, who placed in both rounds.

A highlight of Monday’s performance came in breakaway roping when fan favorite JJ Hampton roped her calf in 2.2 seconds. Hampton, a 17-time world champion and National Cowgirl Hall of Fame inductee, did not record a time in round one and any chance of advancing in Fort Worth hinged on her second-round efforts.

The crowd roared when Hampton’s time was announced as it put her in first by one-tenth of a second. Fellow Stephenville resident Rylee George, who had tied for the first-round win with Louisiana’s Josie Conner on Sunday, was the last cowgirl to rope and stopped the clock in 2.4 seconds for third in the round. Conner’s time of 2.3 on Monday finished second.

Both George and Conner advanced to the semi-finals, but Hampton’s win kept her alive in the tournament as she advanced to the wild card round.

The biggest money winner on Monday was bull rider Gavin Mitchell of Graford, Texas. Mitchell qualified for the Fort Worth rodeo by winning the Palo Pinto Livestock Association Rodeo in Mineral Wells last spring. He was the first cowboy from the chute and had drawn a previously unridden bull from Rafter G Rodeo Company named Bucking for Cash. Mitchell stayed aboard for the full eight seconds, scored 85.5 points and earned $7,000 after no other bull rider made a qualified ride.

Wenda Johnson of Pawhuska, Oklahoma, holds the Dickies Arena barrel racing record at 16.08 seconds. While she wasn’t quite that fast on Monday, her time of 16.27 was nearly two-tenths of a second quicker than any other cowgirl and gave her the round win.

Tuesday is Stock Show Goes Pink Day in Fort Worth to raise awareness for breast cancer research. Bracket 3 will bring in a new slate of competitors who will compete Tuesday and Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Dickies Arena.

Semifinals B decides Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo Championship Finals competitors.

by Susan Kanode

FORT WORTH, Texas, (Feb. 7, 2025) --- Semi-Finals B at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo (FWSSR) ProRodeo Tournament filled the final spots in Saturday’s Championship Finals.

Saturday’s rodeo is shaping up to be one for the record books. Reigning team roping champions in Dickies Arena, Clay Smith and Coleby Payne have earned a spot for a repeat and they did it the hard way. Smith, from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and Payne from Stephenville, Texas, finished third in their bracket to advance to the Wild Card round on Wednesday night. They won that with a 3.8-second run to get to Semi-Finals B.

With Smith, a two-time world champion doing the heading and Payne roping the heels, they had an identical time on Friday night. They have already won more than $8,000 here. If they have the fast time again on Saturday night, they will emerge as champions for the second year in a row.

Last year’s title in Dickies Arena came with $25,000 in earnings for the talented team ropers. That money helped earn them a trip to Las Vegas this past December to compete at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) where world champions are crowned. And, if they hadn’t won Fort Worth’s rodeo, it’s likely that they wouldn’t have been among the top 15 who qualify to compete there.

Bull rider T Parker, from Winnie, Texas, made the trip to compete at rodeo’s championships in 2023. Last year, he competed through March, but injuries forced him to sit out a good part of the year. Parker had a torn rotator cuff and labrum that required surgery and was out for six months.

He’s come back in a big way here. He won round one of Bracket 4 to advance to the Semi-Finals with $3,750 in earnings. Then he was one of three riders to be successful in Semi-Finals B and had the high-scoring ride at 90 points. His success came aboard Sutton Rodeo’s bull named One Chance and that chance paid off with another $4,333 in earnings. Now he’s hoping for a Fort Worth title and another trip to Las Vegas to compete for a gold buckle.

No one has been more successful in Dickies Arena this year than barrel racer Emily Beisel from Weatherford, Oklahoma. Beisel and her great mare Ivory On Fire, Liza, won both rounds of Bracket 4 and Semi-Finals B. She has earned $8,600 here so far.

The FWSSR ProRodeo Tournament concludes on Saturday night with the Championship Finals. Eight contestants in each event have battled through brackets and the Semi-Finals to ride for a title in Dickies Arena. Championships will come down to who has the highest score or fastest time with action getting underway at 7:30 p.m.

Shad Mayfield grew up near Clovis, New Mexico, but when his rodeo career took off, he moved to Lipan, Texas, to pursue his goals. He was the 2020 World Champion Tie-down Roper and then last year earned rodeo’s ultimate buckle, the World Champion All-Around Cowboy. Mayfield also competed in team roping and steer roping to earn that title, but his main source of income and biggest success came in the tie-down roping.

He got his 2024 season off to a great start by winning the tie-down roping in Dickies Arena and is hoping to do that again this year. Mayfield came a step closer to that goal on Thursday night competing in Semi-Finals A. He had the fastest time of the eight-man field at 8.4 seconds. That added $4,000 to his previous earnings. He has already collected $8,433 and will rope for more on Saturday night.

Caldwell, Idaho’s Jacob Lees had the high score in the bareback riding at 88.5 points. He rode J Bar J Rodeo’s horse named All Pink, a horse he was familiar with. The first time Lees got on All Pink, it did not go well but was a learning experience for the two-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) qualifier. When the two matched up here, Lees saw an opportunity to do better and that attitude got him the win and a $4,000 check. He also gets to ride in Dickies Arena on Saturday night for a championship.

Andrea Busby from Brock, Texas, qualified for her first NFR last December and finished as the event champion for having the fastest total time on 10 rounds. She did that riding her great horse “Benny,” Jets Top Gun, a nine-year-old sorrel gelding. With the success she had on Benny last December, many fans might have assumed that she would ride him at Fort Worth.

Instead, Busby has been riding a mare that she calls Derby who is registered as Born on Derby Day. The seven-year-old red roan seems to love the set up and the arena here and they are on track to win a championship. They won the first round of Bracket 7 and placed third in round two to qualify for the Semi-Finals. Busby and Derby stopped the clock in16.20 seconds on Thursday night and will be favorites to win the championship here Saturday night.
Semi-Finals 2 will start at 7:30 p.m. in Dickies Arena on Friday, January 7. Eight contestants in each event start with a clean slate and the best four will advance to Saturday night’s Championships.

Team Ropers set for back-to-back titles at Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo

by Susan Kanode

FORT WORTH, Texas, (Feb. 5, 2025) --- The audience at Wednesday nighTeam Ropers set for back-to-back titles at Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeot’s Wild Card round at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo’s ProRodeo Tournament saw contestants taking chances and giving their all trying to be among the two that advanced to the Semi-Finals.

Three former Fort Worth champions were in that category. One year ago, Clay Smith from Broken Bow, Oklahoma and Coleby Payne from Stephenville, Texas, won the team roping championship in Dickies Arena. They earned $25,000 each. That money gave them a good start on their season and helped to qualify them for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR). In fact, if they had left here with empty pockets, they would not have qualified for rodeo’s championships in Las Vegas this past December.

Knowing just how important a win here can be, Smith and Payne threw caution to the wind on Wednesday night. With Smith roping horns and Payne following at the heels, they stopped the clock in 3.8 seconds. Not only was that the fast time of the night, but it also earned each of them an additional $2,000. And they will be roping in the Semi-Finals where they have a chance to advance to Saturday night’s winner-take-all finals.

Dawson Hay, from Wildwood, Alberta, Canada, is no stranger to winning here. He won the saddle bronc riding title the year the legendary rodeo first moved to Dickies Arena—2020. Then he earned it again in 2023. This year, he qualified for the Wild Card and knew he needed a big score to have a chance to get another championship.

Hay rode the J Bar J horse named Painted J for 89.5 points, the high-marked ride of the night. The Canadian cowboy is currently ranked fourth in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings. A big win here could improve his position and help build momentum for him to qualify for his sixth NFR. His father Rod Hay was one of the most consistent saddle bronc riders in the history of the sport. He won this rodeo three times, in 1993, 2001 and 2008. He also qualified for the NFR on 20 occasions. Dawson Hay has competed at the NFR five times and is looking to make it six in 2025.

There are two Semi-Finals performances to determine who will advance to Saturday night’s Championship Finals. The top two from Wednesday will be among those riding in the Semi-Finals. Semi-Finals 1 starts at 7:30 on Thursday night where the best four in each event get to ride again on Saturday. Semi-Finals 2 is at 7:30 Friday night and again the top four advance.

Montana Cowboy Knows the Importance of Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo

by Susan Kanode

FORT WORTH, Texas, (Feb. 3, 2025) --- The Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo ProRodeo Tournament could be just the steppingstone that bareback rider Sam Petersen from Helena, Montana, needs.

Just a few years ago, Petersen was competing in high school rodeos. He qualified for the National High School Finals Rodeo on more than one occasion and won the prestigious all-around championship there in 2021. The second-generation competitor has been going to rodeos since he was a toddler and started competing before he hit double digits.

His next step up the rodeo ladder came while attending Texas’ Clarendon College and qualifying for the College National Finals Rodeo in bareback riding and steer wrestling. That happened in 2023 when he also started competing on the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association circuit. He finished two spots outside the top 15 who qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo where world champions are crowned.

Petersen’s first time competing here was in 2024 where he earned $4,500 and got a taste of what it would be like to win the rodeo in Dickies Arena. He finished last season in 20th place and is looking to be inside the top 15 this year.

He had the highest marked ride in Bracket 7 with 86.5 points on Generations Pro Rodeo’s horse named Mini Pearl. That ride added $2,300 to his season earnings and gives him a good opportunity to advance to the Semi-Finals.

Another multi-generational competitor and standout in youth competitions was at the top in the breakaway roping. Hali Williams, daughter of eight-time world champion team roping header, Speed Williams, stopped the clock in 2.1 seconds.

Williams, from Comanche, Texas, has competed at the Wrangler National Finals Breakaway Roping twice. She is hoping to earn a gold buckle of her own and a win here would certainly help her accomplish that. Her father won the title here in 2007 and she would love to have a championship of her own from this legendary rodeo.

The high-marked ride in the saddle bronc riding went to Layton Green from Millarville, Alberta, Canada. Green finished the 2024 season in 19th place and is looking to improve that finish this year. He rode the horse named Mary Jane owned by fellow Canadians Macza Pro Rodeo.

Bracket 7 concludes in Dickies Arena on Tuesday night where competitors will be in round 2. Action gets underway at 7:30 p.m.

Younger Wright dominates Bracket 5 at Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo

by Susan Kanode

FORT WORTH, Texas, (Feb. 1, 2025) --- For rodeo contestants competing at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo (FWSSR) ProRodeo Tournament, dominating a bracket is a step towards a championship in Dickies Arena.

Saddle bronc rider Statler Wright did just that for the second consecutive year. One year ago, he made two 88.5-point rides, advanced to the Semi-Finals and then to the Finals. Wright, who lives in Beaver, Utah, tied for fourth place with his older brother Ryder Wright in 2024. The youngest of the second-generation of Wright brothers earned nearly $9,000 which helped him qualify for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

This year, he is back with his eye on the prize. He scored 84.5 points Friday night then came back Saturday morning and scored 87 points on Calgary Stampede’s horse, Zorta Proud. Statler Wright has already won $4,443 and has an opportunity to add to that substantially. If he wins the title here, he would join his father Cody Wright, brother Stetson Wright and uncle Jake Wright as saddle bronc riding champions at the FWSSR.

Four-time world champion Zeke Thurston from Big Valley, Alberta, has something to say about that. Thurston had the highest marked saddle bronc score on Saturday night at 89 points. He rode Pickett Pro Rodeo’s Bill Fick Top Egyptian for the win and will be back Sunday afternoon for his second ride in Bracket 6. Thurston is one of the most successful saddle bronc riders going down the road today, but he has yet to win a title in Dickies Arena.

Another Canadian is working her way to the top in the breakaway roping. Jenna Dallyn has primarily competed at rodeos close to her home in Nanton, Alberta. Her success in her home country helped her qualify for and win the NFR Open in Colorado Springs last July. That win helped her get here, where she stopped the clock in 1.8 seconds on Saturday night - the fastest time so far at this year’s rodeo.

Dallyn and all the Bracket 6 competitors have their second round on Sunday, Feb. 1 starting at 2 p.m. Monday and Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. will feature Bracket 7, the final bracket of the tournament.

Team ropers shine in Bracket 4 at FWSSR ProRodeo Tournament

by Susan Kanode

FORT WORTH, Texas, (Jan. 30, 2025) --- At the Fort Worth Stock Show (FWSSR) & Rodeo ProRodeo Tournament team roping times under four seconds generally earn contestants a good check.
On Thursday night in Dickies Arena, under four seconds was an understatement. Dustin Egusquiza, a seven-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) qualifier from Mariana, Florida was the first to throw his rope as the header.

On the heeling side his partner, Levi Lord, from Sturgis, South Dakota, was working to catch feet. The duo who currently lives near Mineral Wells did their job so well that they tied for the arena record with a time of 3.6. Lightning Aguilara and Coleby Payne first set the record in 2022.

Stephenville, Texas brothers Wyatt and Paden Bray stopped the clock on Thursday at 3.9 to set the pace. Lord and Egusquiza knew they had to be faster to get the win.

Bareback rider Jayco Roper from Oktaha, Oklahoma, qualified for his first NFR in 2023. He missed the competition in 2024 and had major life changes, getting married and becoming a dad to twin girls. Now he’s working to be back in Las Vegas next December for rodeo’s championships.

Roper had the high-marked ride in round one of Bracket 4 at 90.5 points aboard Championship Pro Rodeo’s horse named The Crow.
Setting the pace in the women’s barrel race was Weatherford, Oklahoma’s Emily Beisel. Riding her great mare, Ivory on Fire, that she calls Liza, they stopped the clock in 16.11 seconds. That nearly matched the arena record of 16.08 set by Wenda Johnson in 2022.
All these contestants will have their second round of competition on Friday beginning at 2 p.m. A second performance, Friday evening at 7:30 p.m., will feature a new group of contestants making their first appearance in Bracket 6.

Bracket 3 at FWSSR ProRodeo Tournament filled with thrills and spills

by Susan Kanode

FORT WORTH, Texas, (Jan. 28, 2025) --- Tuesday night at the Fort Worth Stock Show Rodeo could have been a Saturday night for all of the excitement in the action.

It was the first round of Bracket 3 of the ProRodeo Tournament and along with high scores in the bucking events, the women’s events of barrel racing and breakaway roping were won with some fast times.

The highlight of the night came in saddle bronc riding when Brody Cress, who grew up in Hillsdale, Wyoming, but now makes his home at Weatherford, Texas, scored 90.5 points. The horse he originally was slated to ride did not cooperate in the bucking chute. Cress was offered a reride opportunity and gladly accepted it.

He watched as Kolby Wanchuk from Sherwood Park, Alberta, scored 90 points. Cress knew if he was going to get a big check in Dickies Arena, he needed to have a great ride. That’s exactly what he did on Dakota Rodeo’s horse named Smarty Pants. When the judges added up their scores, Cress had a half-point advantage over Wanchuk. They will be here Wednesday night for round 2 where they will both be working towards a qualification for the Semi-Finals of the Tournament.

There was a tie in the bareback riding and the team roping. The bareback riding was between Bradlee Miller, from Huntsville, Texas, who is coming off his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) qualification and Louisiana’s Waylon Bourgeois who both had 87.5 points. In the steer wrestling it was Idaho’s Stetson Jorgensen and another Louisianan, Gavin Soileau that were at the top of the board. Jorgensen was in Las Vegas last month competing at his fifth NFR. Soileau recently won the National Western Stock Show Rodeo in Denver, was the college champion in 2021, and is working on his first NFR qualification. They each stopped the clock in 4.0 seconds.

Another contestant that had success in Denver and is continuing her pace was Carlee Otero from Perrin, Texas. She won the National Western riding a young horse that she calls Leroy. She was the first lady out in Dickies Arena and aboard her great horse, Blingolena, that she calls Sly, stopped the clock in 16.35 seconds, one of the fastest runs here so far.

The breakaway roping was fast with four runs in the two-second range. The fastest time came from Council Grove, Kansas, cowgirl Beau Peterson who stopped the clock in 2.3 seconds for the win.

Wade Tuni, an 18-year-old bull rider from Rock Point, Arizona, is assured a spot in the semi-finals after winning $7,000 as the only qualified ride Tuesday night. He scored 88 points on Andrews Rodeo’s Black Magic.

The money won in round one and two is added together to determine if a contestant advances out of the bracket. The top two money earners will compete in the Semi-Finals while number three goes into a Wild Card Round.

Bracket 3 concludes Monday night at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Bull riding takes the spotlight in Bracket 2 of Fort Worth’s ProRodeo Tournament

by Johna Cravens

FORT WORTH, Texas (Jan. 26, 2025) The highlight of the first round of Bracket 2 at the 2025 Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo (FWSSR) ProRodeo Tournament was the bull riding. First Luke Mast of Hutchinson, Kansas, tried his luck on Rafter G Rodeo’s unridden bull Bumpstock. When the eight-second horn sounded, Mast was still on top of the crossbred bull, and he earned a score of 88.5 points from the rodeo judges.

If anyone was going surpass Mast’s lead, it would be the final rider of the day, Trey Benton III, a seven-time National Finals Rodeo (NFR) bull rider who was matched against Rafter G’s bull Goin Brandon for the third time in Dickies Arena. Three years ago, Benton rode Goin Brandon in the tournament’s Wild Card round for 92.5 points. Two years ago, the pair met in the championship point with the bull winning the matchup.

Benton managed to take the third match Sunday afternoon but fell short of first in the round by half a point with a score of 88. Both he and Mast have an excellent chance to advance to the semi-finals when they compete again in Dickie Arena in the second round Monday night.

The Navajo nation earned bragging rights in team roping with tribal members Derrick Began and Erich Rogers finishing first and second in the round. Arizona ropers Begay of Seba Dalkai and his partner Colter Todd of Willcox won the round with a time of 4.2 seconds. Begay, who has competed at ten NFRs, and Todd, who has roped there four times, were a full second faster than former world champion Rogers of Round Rock, Arizona, and his partner Kollin VonAhn of Blanchard, Oklahoma, who roped their steer in 5.2 seconds.

The action was quick in both women’s events with winners posting this year’s fastest times so far. In breakaway roping Rylee George of Stephenville set the pace with a time of 2.1 seconds and five runs later Josie Conner of Iowa, Louisiana, matched her feat with another 2.1-second run.

A Texan, Jymmy Kay Cox of Pleasanton, grabbed the spotlight riding a horse she calls Chase owned by Jana Riley. Cox and Chase were having a great season in 2024 until a front foot injury sidelined the horse. He has recovered and showed he was back in top form when they turned in the fastest time of this year’s rodeo – 16.27 to win round one of Bracket 2.

Bracket 2 concludes Monday night at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo Action starts at 7:30 p.m. at Dickies Arena.

Mayfield ties record as $1.5 million Fort Worth ProRodeo Tournament Begins

by Johna Cravens

for the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo

FORT WORTH, Texas (Jan. 24, 2025) Shad Mayfield, the newly crowned World Champion All-Around Cowboy and former Wolrd Champion Tie-Down Roper, picked up where he left off at last year’s Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo (FWSSR) at the opening round of the $1.5 million FWSSR ProRodeo Tournament on Friday.

Mayfield, a native of Clovis, New Mexico, who now lives in Lipan, Texas, is the reigning FWSSR champion in tie-down roping and he won the first round of bracket 1 in record fashion. His time of 7.2 seconds matched those of Bryson Sechrist in 2022 and Matt Shiozawa in 2020 to hold the FWSSR record.

This was the beginning of the 16-day tournament which began after the stock show hosted a full week of specialty rodeo events. The tournament format features all eight professional rodeo contests. In each event 56 competitors (56 teams in team roping) are divided into seven brackets of eight.

Contestants in each bracket compete in two rounds of back-to-back action with the top two money earners in each event advancing to the semi-finals and the top four from each semi-finals move on to Championship Saturday, February 8 when the 2025 champions are crowned.

The third highest money winner in each bracket advances to the wild card round along with the highest remaining money earner in each event after all brackets are completed. The top two in the wild card round advance to the semifinals.

In addition to the top-ranked rodeo athletes from the 2024 and early 2025 season, winners from five nearby 2024 Texas rodeos – Cleburne, Denton, Waxahachie, Mineral Wells and Wichita Falls - are invited to compete in the tournament.

The winners from the Ellis County Fair & Rodeo in Waxahachie competed in Bracket 1 and they held their own among their nationally ranked competitors in round one. Glenn Jackson of Okmulgee, Oklahoma, representing the Ellis County Fair & Rodeo finished second to Mayfield in the tie-down roping while Sam Goings of Fallon, Nevada, also representing Waxahachie, split first place in steer wrestling with former world champion Ty Erickson of Helena, Montana. Both men stopped the clock in 3.8 seconds.

Two other cowboys representing the Waxahachie event finished in the money in their respective events. Bareback rider Chad Rutherford of Hillsboro, Texas was third with 83.5 points on Rafter G Rodeo’s R. Watson’s War Rock while National Finals Rodeo (NFR) qualifier and Resistol Rookie of the Year Weston Timberman took first with 84.5 on Brookman Rodeo’s SOS.

Saddle bronc rider Cauy Masters of Leon, Iowa, scored 85 points on Brookman’s Satisfaction for third while two-time NFR cowboy Kade Bruno of Challis, Idaho, won the event with 87.5 points on Brookman’s Ragin’ Lunatic.

Although he qualified on his national ranking, Waxahachie bull rider Maverick Potter hauled in the night’s biggest paycheck when he scored 78 points on Sutton Rodeos’ Dr. Strange and took home $3,750 as the best of just two qualified rides.
