13 JUAN HERNANDEZ TO RECEIVE BILL KING AWARD AT STOCK SHOW LUNCHEON Livestock Appreciation DAY LUNCHEON Juan M. Hernandez immigrated to the U.S. from Mexico as a young boy. His father, Manuel, worked on a ranch near Ballinger, Texas saving enough money to bring his wife and family where there was better opportunity for education and career opportunities. Young Juan and his five brothers and sisters were eager to take advantage of those opportunities their parents dreamed for them. On January 18, Hernandez will accept the Fort Worth Farm and Ranch Club’s W.A. “Bill” King Award for Excellence in Agriculture at the Stock Show’s annual Livestock Appreciation Day Luncheon. The event is presented by Lone Star Ag Credit. Hernandez set his sights on Tarleton State University after graduating from Ballinger High School in 1974. After earning a BS degree in Agricultural Education then a Masters in Education, he embarked on an impressive 34- year career at the Texas Department of Agriculture. As a valued member of the agency’s livestock marketing program, he visited more than 1,000 ranches helping arrange the sale of cattle genetics to buyers across the world. Hernandez participated in hundreds of foreign trade missions to, and from, North and South America, Asia, Africa and Australia. Honored by the Texas Purebred Cattle Alliance, he has played a critical role on the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo’s International Committee for 25 years. His tireless efforts have facilitated thousands in livestock sales from Texas ranchers to dozens of Stock Show international guests from around the globe. “Juan Hernandez’s impact on the Texas purebred cattle industry is tremendous,” said Dana Lewis, president of the Fort Worth Farm and Ranch Club. “We’re delighted to honor him with the Bill King Award for his outstanding contributions.” The award recognizes a business, individual or family that has significantly contributed to agriculture or the agribusiness industry. King founded the Fort Worth Farm and Ranch Club in 1950 and served as the Stock Show’s livestock manager from 1947 to 1977.
